User Accounts

I am taking an entirely new direction for the new instance of Macintosh Garden, for regular, everyday browsing a user account will be required.
While I have been striving - and struggling throughout the years to provide everything for free, at all times without holding back, it feels like this is no longer a sustainable model.

The Macintosh Garden is a great resource, I can tell. And so can probably You.
Since everything is currently provided for free, without limitations.. the website is a fairly large target for content scraping by users, bots and the muppets over at Macintosh Repository. Not only is it a target for scraping content, but there is a constant that is most worrying, and that is the growing threat of bots and malicious traffic. And boy do we serve traffic.

Worry Not
Even though an account will be required to browse and interact with the content, everything is still there, and it will still be free; this is something that I will never change.

More Information!
I have taken into consideration the fact that some users do want to remain anonymous, and the base requirement for an account is just the username and password. So there is no enforcing the use of or binding an E-Mail account to the account, though it does help if subscription services are used or if the password is forgotten.

For the users that decide to remain anonymous and never bind an E-Mail address, a PIN-code is provided on the account settings page, which can be hidden away forever once it is written down, and can be used to reset a password, should it ever be forgotten.

What more is that accounts are valid on MacDomain and vice versa, opening up for additional possibilities.
While I do take all measurements possible to ensure that account data remains safe, it is ultimately up to the end user to keep the account safe with at the very least a strong password.
