VesperNet History,
section MacDomain
Sure, there is Google Groups and some other useful usenet interfaces / servers out there, however I wanted something fresh, standalone and that does not rely on data federation for content.
The challenge here was writing my own usenet server, for practical use behind MacDomain and later VesperNet and finally Macintosh Garden. It took quite a few trips between the various RFCs on the protocol to get it to a state where I had working user authentication and role based access to posting in newsgroups.
It's at a point where newsgroups and access groups are easily managed, the basics behind a usenet server are, as far as I can tell, working as the RFCs tell me that they should, somewhat. It might be possible that I could implement a mail-to-news gateway as well, to allow mailing into the newsgroups, albeit it being slightly unorthodox.
